Co-Washing: What Is That?!

Let me guess:

I’m sure you’re immediately thinking that Co-Washing is the combination of a shampoo and another product, right?

Nice try!

Co-Washing is basically conditioner-only washing.

With co-washing, your hair is not 100% clean but close enough AND your hair feels like second-day hair, which I love because I hate first day hair.

You know how your twistout or style looks super perfect on the first day? Me no like. I prefer the 2nd day hair because it looks a little more relaxed and not tensed from just loosening my twists.

I hope I am making sense here.

What are the benefits of Co-Washing?

I knew you would ask that.

As well as: why would I want partially clean hair instead of 100% clean hair?

Don’t get me wrong, shampooing your hair once a week is perfectly fine.

BUT, if you’re one of those people who shampoos their hair every day or every other day, then I recommend you consider co-washing or sulfate-FREE shampoos.

[Sulfate-Free Shampoos is a post for another day. Stay Tuned]

With co-washing, you are protecting your hair from all of the harsh chemical components of a regular shampoo.

You didn’t know?

Yes, majority of shampoos contain sulfate, which is a salt or ester of sulfuric acid, an aggressive detergent, which dries out your hair.

We want moisturized, hydrated and healthy hair.

Co-Washing is also beneficial because it provides your hair with a good conditioning treatment.

For instance, try this during your next wash day routine:

  • Washing your hair with a shampoo. Pay attention to how your hair feels.
  • Then proceed with applying your conditioner and massage it into your hair and scalp.
  • You will notice the difference between shampoo’d hair without a conditioner VS. shampoo’d hair with conditioner. Your hair will be softer, detangled and more manageable.

I know you want to ask:

Are there any conditioners you can recommend for co-washing?

Absolutely!

#1 Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk Collection Cleansing Conditioner

OR

#2 The Mane Choice’s Revitalize & Refresh 3-in-1 Leave-In, Co-Wash & Detangler

Anyone of the 2 mentioned above are great!

Do you know feel like you’ve gotten a better understanding of what co-washing is?

If not, leave me a comment below so that I can explain further!

Love this . Can you give us the steps to co washing. Im taking it form what you’ve said in this post. You just put a conditioner your hair and wash it out with shampooing it.
